Human resource is considered as an asset for any country. It plays an important role in economic development and growth. Greater the proportion of young persons in the population of a country, larger is the workforce, and, thus, more is the economic potential. However, with passage of time, the proportion of older persons in the population of a country increases, due to economic well-being, better health care system, good medicines, etc. there is substantial reduction in mortality in the society. The current population of India is 1,381,641,319 as on August 15, 2020; according to Census 2011 there are nearly 104 million elderly persons (aged 60 years or above) in India; 53 million females and 51 million males. Tamil Nadu has the second highest percentage of senior citizens (above 60 years) in the country and the State is greying at a rate of 2.2 per cent, according to a study by United Nations Population Fund. The study “Caring for our elders: Early Responses India Ageing Report 2017”, states that Tamil Nadu has 11.2 per cent of elderly population and is ranked behind Kerala, which has 12.3 per cent of greying population.
With the above back drop, Samarpanam Trust (ST), after conducting extensive field level study embarked upon taking up the social cause of establishing a Senior Citizens (SCs) home. Accordingly, the Founder Trustees, viz., Mr M Balasubramanian and Mr S Muralidharan, considered to set up a Trust, for the purpose of promoting assisted living and aid to SCs. ST, a Public Charitable Trust is registered in Chennai, Tamil Nadu and presently having its Registered Office at Vadapalani, Chennai. Being a public charitable organization, the beneficiaries under ST are not restricted to any particular religion, caste, creed or community.
The main objective is to establish, manage, run, takeover the management of or to assist in establishing, old age homes, elderly care retirement communes, holistic treatment, hospitals, clinics, pharmacies, nursing homes, medical dispensaries, diagnostic laboratory centres, ambulances, research centres, chemists and druggists, and establishing, maintaining and running of homes for providing refuge and shelter to the aged widows, handicapped persons, other marginalized or deprived sections of society and to provide medical care, health and facilities to any person in India. ST is pursuing the aforesaid objects without any profit motive.
In line with the aforesaid objectives, ST commenced its operations on Oct 01, 2020 by identifying a suitable place for operating a Senior Citizens Home at Sriperumbudur, Kanchipuram District, distance of 40 Kms from Chennai. It has been taken on long lease; the place has proper ventilation, water supply, electrical and other fittings which is suitable for managing the centre. It is advantageously located with necessary logistics support, viz., proximity to hospitals, temples, shops, road transport and rail connectivity. It is easily accessible from the capital city of Tamil Nadu, by road, rail, etc., It is an independent building constructed on ground plus first floor having 20 furnished rooms with sufficient number of wash rooms (common and attached) besides a fully functional kitchen, dining area, puja room / meditation hall, recreation area cum library and a first aid room.
Samarpanam Senior Citizens Home (SSCH) is operated under the aegis of Samarpanam Trust (ST) which provides all the necessities for the underprivileged and needy Senior Citizens in our country. Presently SSCH has a strength of three Senior Citizen residents, two female and one male all above 70 years of age. SSCH is planning to expand its operations in a phased manner in due course of time by offering a healthy, stress free living to all.
Overall operations of SSCH is being managed by founder Trustees who have devoted their time for scaling up the activities, thereby creating an environment conducive for restoring the honour and dignity of the needy and disadvantaged Senior Citizens. An internal working committee constituted by the founders, comprising of retired professionals from various walks of life provide guidance and support for carrying on day to day activities in a smooth and efficient manner. SSCH is focussing on the main objectives of ST and is expected to grow in the days to come. Necessary planning is underway to spruce the building and make it more eco friendly for healthy, happy living of the Senior residents.
ST strives hard to promote national integration, communal harmony, peaceful co-existence and thereby foster unity among all people in India, its citizens, youth and students so as to imbibe and preserve in them the pride and spirit of India, its culture and tradition.
